“I think I drank too much,” Derek slurred as Max slipped an arm around his waist to help him up the steps onto Max’s back porch.

“Hanging out with those guys can do that to you,” he commented, remembering the last time he’d spent the night, playing cards and talking with Brody and Tony.

“Les tends to stay away from alcohol because of the medicine he still takes for his head, but Randy can give Tony a run for his money at times.”

Max grinned at the serious expression on Derek’s face as his lover tried to make his feet work, lifting them higher than normal.

“I thought you were a professional drinker,” he teased as he got the door open without losing hold of Derek.

“I drank whisky and it doesn’t do anything to me except make me pass out. Beer, on the other hand, makes me silly.”

“And makes you regret all the drinking the next day?”

Derek nodded his head and groaned. Not bothering to turn any lights on, Max led the way up to his room where he stripped Derek down to his boxer briefs before getting him set up in the bathroom.

“Brush your teeth and get ready for bed,” he ordered, propping the man up at the counter before handing him his toothbrush and toothpaste.

He headed back downstairs to lock up, confident that Derek would be able to complete those two tasks without help. After checking the windows and doors, he went back upstairs. He heard Derek yell his name as he got to the top.

“Max!”

Jogging to the bathroom, he froze in the doorway and his jaw dropped. Derek sat on the toilet, toothbrush in hand. There was toothpaste everywhere, but on the brush. Somehow, Derek even had it in his hair.

Derek pouted, his bottom lip trembling. “I can’t get the toothpaste on my brush.”

Biting his lip to keep from laughing, he took the offending items from his lover’s hand and managed to get the right amount of paste on the brush. He handed it back to Derek.

“Do you need me to help you stand?”

Derek glared at him, weaving slightly as he pushed to his feet. “I’m perfectly capable of brushing my own teeth.”

“Of course you are.”

Okay, maybe letting Derek drink hadn’t been a good idea, but Max didn’t think the man would relapse into his normal drinking patterns. There were other ways for him to tire himself out now and Max could keep an eye on him, since they were living together for now.

Derek listed to one side, but managed to get his teeth brushed without further incident. Max cleaned up the mess and got them both into bed. They snuggled together and he smiled as Derek’s soft snores filled the air. All in all, it had been the most fun he’d had with his bosses in a long time, though he admitted he’d never made much effort before this to spend time with them.
